At Leather Hub, our sheepskin rugs are made from real sheep hide — not synthetic fleece, not bonded backing, not imitation materials. Every rug in this collection comes from our own tannery in Pakistan, where halal-certified sheepskin is tanned with the natural fleece intact, producing a soft, genuine sheepskin rug that is warmer, softer, and more durable than any synthetic alternative.
We carry the widest colour range of genuine sheepskin rugs available from any direct-source tannery: 20 colour variants including natural white, cream, brown, tan, and over a dozen dyed shades — teal, mint green, yellow, mauve, burgundy, red, smoky grey, noir black, and more. Both natural undyed fleece and vivid dyed options are available, so whether you are decorating a minimalist Scandinavian interior or adding a bold accent to a maximalist space, we have the right sheepskin rug for your project.
We supply wholesale and retail buyers with direct-tannery pricing and international shipping.
What Makes a Real Sheepskin Rug?
A real sheepskin rug is made from a genuine sheep hide — the whole skin of the animal, with the natural wool or fleece left intact on one side and tanned leather on the reverse. The fleece side is the soft, visible surface of the rug. The leather underside provides the rug's structure and stability.
Genuine sheepskin rugs are different from synthetic sheepskin in several important ways:
|
Feature |
Genuine Sheepskin Rug |
Synthetic / Faux Sheepskin |
|
Material |
Real sheep hide and natural wool fleece |
Polyester or acrylic fibres on a fabric backing |
|
Softness |
Naturally soft — lanolin in the fleece keeps fibres supple |
Soft initially but can mat and flatten with use |
|
Temperature regulation |
Natural — warm in winter, cool in summer |
Poor — no temperature regulation |
|
Durability |
Lasts years to decades with proper care |
Degrades faster — fibres mat and pill |
|
Smell |
Natural wool/hide scent |
Chemical/synthetic smell initially |
|
Sustainability |
Biodegradable, natural by-product |
Petroleum-based synthetic — not biodegradable |
|
Care |
Hand wash or spot clean |
Often machine washable but degrades faster |
|
Patina with age |
Improves — fleece softens and enriches |
Deteriorates with age and use |
At Leather Hub, every sheepskin rug is genuine — we are a manufacturer, not a retailer, and we do not carry synthetic or faux sheepskin products in this collection.

Natural colour sheepskin rugs show the unaltered fleece of the animal — slight natural variation in shade is normal and adds to the authentic character. Dyed sheepskin rugs use non-toxic dyes that penetrate the fleece fibers for consistent, long-lasting color that does not fade quickly or bleed.
Where to Use Sheepskin Rugs
-
Bedroom: next to the bed for a warm, soft surface underfoot in the morning — white, cream, and natural tones are most popular for bedrooms
-
Living room: as a statement rug under a coffee table or in front of a fireplace — larger natural or bold dyed colors work well here
-
Nursery and children's rooms: exceptionally soft and safe underfoot — natural undyed fleece is the most popular for baby and child spaces
-
Home office: under a desk chair for comfort and warmth — cream, tan, and grey tones suit professional home office settings
-
Chair and sofa throw: draped over the back of a chair or sofa as a decorative accent — any color works as a throw
-
Dining area: under a dining table as a natural texture anchor — larger natural or brown-toned hides work well here
-
Entryway: as a welcoming mat or feature piece — practical and decorative, but ensure the underside is secured with a non-slip mat
Are Sheepskin Rugs Ethical?
A common question from buyers who care about animal welfare and ethical sourcing. Our sheepskin rugs are produced from the hides of animals slaughtered for meat — the hide is a by-product of the food industry, not the primary reason the animal is raised. This is the same model used by all genuine leather producers.
All our sheepskin hides are halal-certified — sourced from animals slaughtered according to halal standards, which include specific welfare requirements during handling and slaughter. Our tannery in Pakistan is halal-compliant. This certification is verified and traceable.
Sheepskin rugs from our tannery are biodegradable (unlike synthetic alternatives) and the fleece is not treated with harmful chemicals — our tanning process uses methods that preserve the natural lanolin in the fleece, keeping it soft and naturally resistant to dirt.
How to Care for a Genuine Sheepskin Rug
Regular maintenance:
-
Shake the rug outdoors periodically to remove dust and debris
-
Vacuum on a low setting with a soft brush attachment — go with the fleece direction, not against it
-
Brush regularly with a sheepskin or pet slicker brush to prevent the fleece from matting
Spot cleaning:
-
Blot spills immediately with a clean dry cloth — do not rub
-
Dab gently with cool water and a small amount of wool-safe shampoo or soap
-
Rinse by dabbing with clean water, reshape, and air dry flat away from direct heat
Full cleaning (when needed):
-
Hand wash in cool water with wool-safe detergent — never use hot water or biological detergents
-
Do not machine wash — agitation causes the leather backing to crack and the fleece to felt
-
Do not tumble dry — reshape while damp and dry flat at room temperature
-
Once dry, brush the fleece gently to restore its natural volume and softness
