Tricolor Cowhide — Three Natural Tones, One Hide

A tricolor cowhide rug carries three naturally occurring colours — typically black, white, and brown — distributed across a single hide in irregular patches. The proportion of each colour varies from animal to animal. Some tricolor hides are predominantly dark; others show a more even three-way distribution.

No dye is added to produce a tricolor pattern. The three tones are entirely biological — the result of pigmentation variation in the individual animal's coat. The tanning process preserves those colours exactly. What you see is an accurate record of the animal's natural markings.

At a distance, a tricolor rug reads as a complex, layered neutral. Up close, the three distinct tones become individually visible. This dual quality — reading as a neutral from across the room, showing rich detail at close range — makes tricolor one of the most versatile patterns in the cowhide range.

Salt and Pepper Cowhide — Natural Gray Without Dye

A salt and pepper cowhide rug is produced when black and white hairs are closely interspersed across the hide surface. No individual section is purely black or purely white — instead, both colours appear within each area of the hide, mixed at the level of individual hair strands.

From a normal viewing distance, the eye blends the black and white hairs optically, producing the appearance of gray. Viewed up close, the individual hairs of each colour remain separately visible. This creates a gray tone that is organic and variable rather than flat and uniform.

The perceived shade of gray shifts depending on the ratio of black to white hairs in each area of the hide. A heavier black coverage produces a darker, cooler gray; more white produces a warmer, lighter tone. No two salt and pepper hides read as exactly the same shade of gray throughout.

Dark Tricolor — A Moodier Variation

Some tricolor hides carry significantly heavier black and deep brown coverage. These are often described as dark tricolor cowhide rugs. The overall tone reads darker — the lighter areas exist as accents within a predominantly dark surface rather than an even distribution.

Dark tricolor rugs suit rooms with richer, deeper colour schemes — charcoal or slate walls, dark timber furniture, and upholstery in deep navy, forest green, or warm burgundy. The darker rug grounds these rooms without disappearing into the overall palette.

Why Tricolor and Gray Are Highly Versatile Patterns

A tricolor or salt-and-pepper cowhide rug is among the least pattern-specific options in the range. Because it reads as a complex neutral rather than a strong single colour, it does not impose a direction on the room's colour palette. It works alongside warm tones, cool tones, and highly neutral schemes equally well.

This versatility is why these patterns work in transitional and contemporary interiors — spaces that do not commit fully to one design style. A tricolor rug can sit in a traditional living room as naturally as in a modern one, adapting to the surrounding scheme without conflict.

The multi-tone surface also ages gracefully. Unlike a single-colour dyed rug, a tricolor or gray hide does not show uneven fading over time — any tonal shift from UV exposure is distributed across all three tones and is far less visually apparent.

Construction and Tannery Origin

Every tricolor and salt-and-pepper hide in our range is produced at our own tannery in Pakistan from halal-certified cowhide. The full hair-on surface is preserved through tanning and laid flat for floor use. The tanned leather reverse provides structural stability without synthetic support.

Care Instructions

Vacuum in the direction of the hair with a soft brush attachment. Blot liquid spills immediately and allow to air dry flat. For surface marks on the darker areas, wipe gently with a damp cloth — dark hair can show soap residue, so rinse the area thoroughly and allow to dry before use.
