At Leather Hub, we produce chrome tanned leather hides in five species — cowhide, buffalo, goatskin, sheepskin, and deerskin — all from our own tannery in Pakistan. Chrome tanning is the most widely used tanning process in modern leather production, valued for producing soft, flexible, water-resistant leather in less time and with more consistent colour uptake than traditional methods.
Our chrome tanned collection is one of the most varied you will find from a single direct-source tannery. Alongside standard gloss and matte finishes, we carry chrome tanned crust leather, tie-dye buffalo, metallic, zebra print, camo print, flower print, and embossed variants — finishes that most suppliers do not stock at all, let alone in multiple species. All hides are halal-certified and priced direct from the manufacturer, with no import or distribution markups.
Whether you need chrome tanned cowhide for bags and upholstery, soft goatskin for garments and small accessories, or unusual printed finishes for fashion-forward projects — this collection has the breadth to supply it.
What is Chrome Tanning?
Chrome tanning — also called chromium tanning or chrome-tan — is a leather processing method that uses chromium sulphate salts to convert raw animal hide into finished leather. It is the dominant tanning process in modern commercial leather production, used for approximately 80–85% of all leather made worldwide.
The process works by immersing prepared hides in a solution of chromium salts inside rotating drums. The chromium ions bind to the collagen fibres in the hide, crosslinking them and stabilising the leather structure. The entire process takes 24 hours or less — significantly faster than vegetable tanning, which can take several weeks. After tanning, hides go through dyeing, fat-liquoring, and finishing processes to achieve the desired color, softness, and surface.
The result is a leather that is characteristically softer, more pliable, and more resistant to water and heat than vegetable tanned leather. Chrome tanned leather also accepts dyes more readily and consistently, which is why it dominates the fashion and garment leather markets.
Chrome Tanned vs Vegetable Tanned Leather
The two most common tanning methods produce leather with distinctly different characteristics. Here is the practical comparison for buyers:

Softness & flexibility |
Soft, supple, highly flexible |
Firmer, denser — stiffens further with age |

Water resistance |
High — resists moisture well |
Lower — absorbs moisture more readily |

Excellent — rich, consistent, vibrant colours |
Good but more muted — natural tones dominate |
|
Patina development |
Minimal — stays consistent over time |
Develops rich patina with use and age |

Poor — too soft for clean carving impressions |
Excellent — firm surface holds tool impressions |

Neither method is universally better — the right choice depends on your end product. We carry both chrome tanned and vegetable tanned leather, so you can compare and source from one supplier regardless of your project requirements.
Our Chrome Tanned Leather — Species & Finishes
We offer chrome tanned leather across more species and finish types than most suppliers. Here is what is available in this collection:
Chrome Tanned Cowhide
Our chrome tanned cowhide is available in high shine gloss, matte, and crust finishes. Cowhide is the most versatile base for chrome tanning — its large hide size makes it ideal for bags, upholstery, shoe panels, and any project requiring a substantial piece. We also carry chrome tanned cowhide with camo print and embossed patterns (croc and snake).
Chrome Tanned Buffalo Leather
Buffalo hide is naturally thicker and more heavily grained than cowhide, giving chrome tanned buffalo a more pronounced texture and a more robust, structured feel. Available in metallic and tie-dye crust finishes — both unique products. The tie-dye crust buffalo is one of the most unusual products in our entire catalogue: a multi-colour tie-dye pattern on unfinished crust leather, ready for artisan finishing.
Chrome Tanned Goatskin
Goatskin chrome tanned leather is naturally softer and finer-grained than cowhide, with a characteristically smooth surface. Available in matte, high shine, and printed finishes (zebra print crust, flower print). Chrome tanned goatskin is popular for garments, gloves, small leather goods, bookbinding, and any application where a fine, lightweight leather is needed.
Chrome Tanned Sheepskin
Our chrome tanned sheepskin leather is one of the softest and most pliable leathers in the collection — the natural fineness of the ovine grain combined with chrome tanning's softening effect produces a leather ideal for garments, linings, soft accessories, and fashion applications. Available in matte, high shine, zebra print, and flower print crust variants.
Chrome Tanned Deerskin
Chrome tanned deerskin is notable for its exceptional softness and the distinctive natural pore pattern of deer hide. It is lighter weight than cowhide while maintaining good tensile strength. Available in matte and high shine finishes. Popular for gloves, soft bags, wallet linings, and high-end fashion accessories.
Crust Chrome Tanned Leather
Several tiles in our chrome tanned collection are crust leather — tanned but not yet fully finished, with no surface dye or coating applied. Crust leather is the preferred material for leatherworkers who want to apply their own finish, dye, or custom treatment. We offer chrome tanned crust in buffalo (tie-dye), goatskin (zebra print), sheepskin (zebra print), and cowhide (camo print) — all pre-printed or pre-textured before finishing, giving artisans a decorated crust base that is rare to find.
Printed & Embossed Chrome Tanned
Our printed chrome tanned range includes: camo cowhide, zebra print goatskin, zebra print sheepskin, flower print goatskin, flower print sheepskin, and croc & snake embossed variants. These are chrome tanned as the tanning method with a surface print or emboss applied during finishing. The combination of chrome tanning's softness with a bold print or emboss creates materials suited to fashion-forward accessories, garments, and statement goods.
Applications of Chrome Tanned Leather
-
Garments: jackets, skirts, trousers, and trim panels. Chrome tanning produces the soft drape needed for wearable leather.
-
Bags and handbags: the most common application. Chrome tanned cowhide and goatskin dominate commercial bag production.
-
Upholstery: sofas, automotive interiors, headboards, and panels. Water resistance and colour stability are key here.
-
Shoes and boots: upper leather, linings, and insoles. Chrome tanned leather is the industry standard for footwear.
-
Gloves: — soft goatskin and deerskin chrome tanned are the leading glove materials.
-
Small leather goods: wallets, cardholders, key fobs. Fine grain, soft hand, and colour richness are all chrome tanning qualities.
-
Leathercraft and artisan projects: crust chrome tanned leather allows full custom finishing by the maker.
-
Fashion accessories: belts, straps, and trim. Printed and embossed chrome tanned for statement pieces.
